After quite a bit of use in the field, there are a few First Lite products that I will never hunt without. The First Lite product line has options that will cover pretty much any hunting scenario known to man. But there are a few products specifically that can always be in your gear bag, no matter where your hunting adventures may take you. I have discussed the reasons why I wear First Lite products before, so no need to rehash them here. Here are the 3 First Lite products that I would never go hunting without:
The Llano is a base layer shirt that is available in long (crew or quarter zip) or short sleeve. The crew is great for layering and the QZ is great for a stand-alone piece in warmer weather; the short-sleeve Llano is great for those early season hunts when the temps can get really high.
The reason I love the Llano is because it is so versatile. I can shed layers and hunt in the Llano when the sun comes out, but if temps drop, it serves as the perfect next-to-skin piece. Coupled with a mid-weight piece or outer layer, the Llano retains heat very well and allows for minimal layering, even when it is close to freezing out. The 17.5 micron super fine merino wool is soft and is not scratchy at all. It breathes well and is just a fantastic piece.
Chama (QZ or Hoodie)
The Chama is such a great piece! It is available as a quarter zip or hoodie and is a mid-weight piece that can be worn on its own or in conjunction with the Llano when temps drop. I would keep the Chama QZ in my pack during my September elk hunt and multiple times I would have to pull it out when temps dropped on the mountain and it performed flawlessly. It is warm enough to keep you comfortable down to near freezing temps and it still regulates your body temp when things heat up. I also have a Chama hoodie that I will use when hunting whitetails from a tree stand. It is a great piece and I will always have a Chama close by when I am hunting.
First Lite’s line of socks has socks for any condition. I exclusively wore the Mountain Athlete Crew on my last hunt and I loved them. They fit well, they don’t slide down your calf, and they are 100% merino wool so you can wear them repeatedly without odor building up. I have yet to try their Triad sock, but I have a suspicion that those will become a favorite as well as they combine the best of merino with the benefits of compression. Once I am able to try them out, I will let you know.
While every hunt is different, you can bet on it that I will have these three pieces with me on every single hunt.
