Review: Paleo Meals to Go

May 17, 2016 — Leave a comment

Since many of us are relatively adventurous during our hunts and have a keen eye for eating healthy and nutritious, why should we sacrifice when eating in the field or on the go? Thanks to Dawn and Ty at Paleo Meals to Go you don’t have to settle for lackluster nutritional value or highly processed foods to keep you marginally fueled during the hunt.Their packaged meals are made with actual, real, food.  I know that sounds funny but read the ingredients in the reviews below!  I’m not sure I could cook this “clean” at home and still have it taste this good.  Another advantage of these delicious meals from Paleo Meals to Go is even if you aren’t backpacking into the mountains for a week they have a place in your pantry.  Let’s say you have a day off to sneak some hunting (or fishing in my case last Friday) in around home, the last thing you want to do is waste your precious time cooking.  Pick up one or two of these Paleo Meals to Go and all you have to do is add water and you will be completely satisfied and doing what you love doing.  I had the chance to sample three of Paleo Meals to Go’s offerings and have provided you my thoughts below.  Here’s a hint…I’ll be buying some more of these.

Palisade Pineapple Mango

Calories 640, Protein 12g, Fat 50g, Carbs 47g

Ingredients: Coconut, flaxseed meal, almond flour, walnuts, pecans, bananas, coconut sugar, pineapple, mango, ground vanilla beans, sea salt

My Thoughts: The fruit inside was prevalent and tasted great.  It gave a sweet and fresh appeal which would be welcome on about day five of a hunt.  The nuts were noticeable and not just ground up crumbs.  I don’t like coconut but in this mix it was hardly discernible and didn’t bother me in the least bit.  Probably because it wasn’t the shaved, processed stuff you usually get.  The flaxseed meal and almond flour gave it a very good consistency and a hot cereal comfort feel to it.  The ingredients as a whole complemented each other very well in this breakfast medley.  The ground vanilla beans were the icing on the cake so to speak making this an extremely pleasurable eating experience.

Summary: This meal is a great way to start your day.  With a substantial amount of calories you can eat this first thing in the AM and be good to go till lunch.  Don’t worry about the fat content as you can tell from the ingredients it’s all the good fat we are encouraged to eat.

Canyon Chicken Chili

Calories 310, Protein 40g, Fat 2.5g, Carbs 37g

Ingredients: Chicken, sweet potatoes, coconut sugar, mushrooms, cauliflower, green chili pepper, spices, celery, sea salt

My Thoughts: When I opened the package (after the specified time following adding the water) my olfactory senses were met with a wonderful smell.  It was like a homemade pot of chili had been simmering all afternoon waiting for me to dig in.  The chicken inside was firm and chunky.  Just the right amount of spices were present.  By the right amount of spices I mean that it was not spicy but you certainly knew you were eating a bowl of chili and not some bland combination of ingredients.  There was just a hint of sweetness hiding somewhere inside that mixed well with the mild spicyness.  The sweet potatoes actually looked and tasted like cut up sweet potatoes.  The cauliflower was in manageable pieces and not just tiny bits added as an afterthought.  They had a very nice body to them, not crunchy or mushy, just right.  Along those same lines there were no leathery pieces of anything in the chili.  All food in the mix had the texture that you would expect in a freshly prepared meal and not hard, chewy pieces that I have experienced in other packaged meals.  Please note that the nutritional information on the label even shows vitamin A, C, calcium, and iron due to this mix not being overly processed and utilizing extremely natural and healthy ingredients.

Summary: The 40 grams of protein was not a typo!  This is a very solid and filling meal that fully satisfied my hunger after a morning on the lake.   There is no filler added to this chili, everything you eat is of high quality and nutritious.  Just good wholesome food, which is what we all want, right?  It tastes fantastic and you’d have no issues eating this more than once on any given hunt.

APEX Fruit Snacks

Calories 170, Protein 2g, Fat 0g, Carbs 42g

Ingredients: Bananas, mango, strawberries, pineapple, blueberries

My Thoughts: These fruit snacks are awesome!  No water is required, you just open and eat.  The fruit taste was very enticing.  These are not dull, bland, tasteless, processed pieces of fruit.  They are very sweet and tangy and make you feel like you’re actually eating something that was at one time a succulent piece of nature.  The mangos are a great addition to this mix and the blueberries have hints of tartness reaffirming they are actually fruit.  Along with the natural taste these have some vitamins and minerals remaining after the drying process as is evident on the nutrition label.  Generally dried fruits contain little to no nutritional value but these do.  Looking at the ingredients you won’t feel guilty about sitting down and eating a whole bag since the only thing in the bag is fruit!  Just plain, whole, fruit!  Another thing I really liked about these is if you are the type to try and save a little money and buy nuts in bulk to make your own trail mix these are a clean and healthy way to get some fruity sweetness in your mix.

Summary: These fruit snacks not only have a place in your pack they belong in your house.  My wife is always looking for dried fruit for the kids that isn’t loaded with sugar and preservatives.  We now have an option!  I shared these with my 7, 3, and 1 year old and they ate them like they were candy.  The fruit taste is so good in these you’ll definitely want to have them with you on a weeklong trip in the mountains to bring a little sweet, fruity, sunshine to your days.

In conclusion, these Paleo Meals to Go were fantastic. They could easily change the name to “healthy, delicious, whole meals for the guy who doesn’t like to cook”.  I recommend these for your next hunting trip or anytime you will be on the run and unable to prepare your own meal.  Don’t forget to use discount code HF25 to get 25% off your order!!
