A week or so ago I did a review on EPIC bars and was extremely please with their products. I wanted to follow up the bars with another product they offer, Hunt and Harvest Mixes. These take the natural meat and protein content of their bars and combine it with some additional sources for protein, fat, and carbs to give you even more options in the field and when you’re on the go. One of the really great things about these mixes is that the meat and other contents are kept in separate pouches to maintain the appropriate textures and freshness. When you’re ready to cure your hunger pains you just pull apart the seal keeping the two pouches separate and you’re in for a pleasurable, natural, and healthy snack. EPIC currently offers 5 different mixes which I have detailed below.
Uncured Bacon Lust
140 Calories, 9g Protein, 8g Carbs, 8g Fat
Ingredients: Cashews, almonds, walnuts, organic dried cranberries, sweet potato chips, pepitas, ground jalapenos, ground rosemary, Bacon Bites (pork, water, sea salt, vinegar, celery powder)
My Thoughts: The bacon bites were extremely tender with a taste landing somewhere between ham and bacon. The nuts were crunchy and fresh as would be expected. The sweet potato chips were crunchy as well and had a very real sweet potato taste to them. Just the right amount of natural sweetness comes from the cranberries and there are only minor hints of jalapeno so no need to worry about any excessive spicyness.
Summary: Excellent mix of healthy sources of proteins and fats with some dried fruit added for natural sweetness. This was a good, solid combination of ingredients where nothing is overpowering and everything seems to complement each other.
130 Calories, 7g Protein, 9g Carbs, 7g Fat
Ingredients: Jerky (grass fed beef, wildflower honey, water, sea salt, black pepper, celery powder, garlic powder), coconut
My Thoughts: I really don’t like coconut but this mix was awesome. The coconut is in large crispy slices and browned (toasted) just enough so that you know it. It does not give the taste or texture of the commercial shredded coconut. Honestly, it almost had a buttery taste to it. The jerky was very tender and easily chewable. It gave a very mild yet traditional jerky taste.
Summary: The jerky and coconut just tasted natural and gave a very healthy vibe when mixed and eaten together. Don’t let the coconut scare you away and it’s a nice source of a few extra carbs if you’re banging out the miles on the trail.
120 Calories, 7g Protein, 8g Carbs, 6g Fat
Ingredients: Jerky (grass fed beef, wildflower honey, water, sea salt, black pepper, celery powder, garlic powder), Berry Blend (almonds, organic mulberries, organic goji berries, organic cacao nibs, organic coconut chips)
My Thoughts: The jerky follows suit and is very tender and easily eaten. The mix of berries is very unique and adds plenty of sweetness (especially the mulberries). The coconut chips are vaguely noticeable but do complete the mix with a buttery carb texture. The cacao becomes more noticeable as you work your way to the bottom of bag as they are relatively small in size and filter down.
Summary: Nice and sweet mix of ingredients. The berries really set this one apart from the others.
130 Calories, 9g Protein, 8g Carbs, 6g Fat
Ingredients: Jerky (grass fed beef, wildflower honey, water, sea salt, black pepper, celery powder, garlic powder), Mountain Medley (roasted almonds, roasted pecans, organic apples, roasted macadamia nuts)
My Thoughts: The jerky comes through as firm and slightly salty. This is a very nutty mix with the almonds being whole and very crunchy. The apples do add a tiny bit of sweetness and the brazil nuts are a nice change of pace.
Summary: This is a very solid mix with no surprises. Anyone could enjoy this combo of goodies including my three year old who was digging in while I was trying to perform the review.
130 Calories, 9g Protein, 4g Carbs, 8g Fat
Ingredients: Jerky (grass fed beef, wildflower honey, water, sea salt, black pepper, celery powder, garlic powder), Nut Mix (roasted almonds, roasted pecans, roasted brazil nuts, pistachios)
My Thoughts: The jerky was meaty and tasty. The almonds, brazil nuts, and pecans give a very nutty appearance and presence to this mix however, the pistachios really separate this mix from some of the others. There is no fruit in this mix so you don’t get any natural sweetness but you lose a few carbs if your trying to limit your intake.
Summary: No frills with this one. Just a very solid, tasty, mix of nuts and meat.
The Hunt and Harvest Mixes from EPIC get a thumbs up from me. They combine their superb meat products with various combinations that would keep you going on the hunt. They’re great to have around the house as a healthy snack and the kids will love them.
