The Sitka Fanatic Series Finally Meets the Needs Required by Serious Whitetail Hunters

When you think high performance hunting clothing there is a short list of companies that come to mind, Sitka being one of them.  I have experimented with several brands and was presented with the opportunity to give the Fanatic Series a test this fall hunting whitetails here in Illinois.  I have had my eye on their gear for a while and once I found out they had a series targeting stand hunting for deer I couldn’t resist.  I’ve tried it all and can say that up to this point I’ve managed, but haven’t come across an article or set of clothing that really impressed me.  That is until now.  Continue Reading…

Smartwool Socks Have been in My Drawer for Years…and for Good Reason.  They Work.

My dad used to tell me all the time that your feet are the most important part of your body (short of your brain of course) and you’ve got to take care of them.  As my experiences have grown I realize just what he is talking about.  Aside from wearing quality boots your socks are something you should take into consideration as well.  Something else I have really began to get an appreciation for is wool.  With all the “advancements” in wool, coupled with it’s tried and true qualities, there is no reason why it shouldn’t be utilized in your socks.  With all that said I’d like to recommend Smartwool socks to be added to your hunting gear.  They have some fantastic products that I have been using for years and they were recently kind enough to send me a couple of pairs to highlight for you guys.  Let me say this, I have been wearing them for years on my own accord, so just because I am going to write about the new ones I just received, my comments are based on years of experience and satisfaction in Smartwool socks.   Continue Reading…

Believe it or not your belt is an extremely important piece of your hunting wardrobe you don’t want to overlook.  As a matter of fact several belts from Croakies saved me and my partners backpack elk hunt last year.  We had been training religiously leading up to the hunt.  One guy lost 30 lbs to give you an idea of the effort that had been put into preparing for this.  Continue Reading…

Can You See Your Dad Here?  (Photo Courtesy of crestedbutteguides.com)

The weather is finally halfway decent out and Dad loves to mix his workouts up with some trail taming. Why not get him outfitted to hit those hiking (or running if he’s ambitious) trails with style and energy?  It could also be a great opportunity for Dad to spend some quality time with you while exposing yourselves to some of nature’s greatest views.  Below are some suggestions for an active outdoors dad geared towards a day of pounding the trails. I recently had the opportunity to test and use 3 of First Lite’s newest additions: The Cirrus Puffy, VAPOR StormLight Jacket, and SEAK StormTight Jacket. I wanted to write up my thoughts on these new pieces as I think that everyone will have a place for these items in their packs this fall. Continue Reading…

A common occurrence for those who exercise regularly is experiencing tightness, pain, and inflammation. This is often the result of musculoskeletal changes that take place as a result of injury, wear-and-tear on joints, and other contributing factors. You body is made to function properly without pain so when you experience pain in muscles and joints, it is because something is wrong. Without correction, the problem will only get worse and worse. Odor control is a pretty popular topic these days. Even though it is impossible to completely eliminate scent, it is possible to prevent the build up of odor. Some fabrics naturally prevent the build up of odor causing bacteria (such as merino wool), but these options are often expensive and not always ideal for certain environments. Synthetic clothing performs very well in wet, hot, or humid conditions, but is also notorious for becoming stinky within a day (sometimes just a few hours) of being worn.

Many different attempts have been made at treating fabrics with chemical sprays or using different fabrics, but the results are all over the map. Polygiene is a company that has come as close to perfecting the odor-control game as possible and I wanted to spend some time detailing their products as I believe there is a place in your hunting pack and your gym bag for Polygiene treated clothing.
