Don’t Sit Back and Wait (photo courtesy of pinterest.com).

The new year is upon us and we should all be retooling (our bodies and gear) for the upcoming fall.   While I plan to bring you  updates on the latest and greatest gear, my focus today is more on your body.  If you’re like me then you busted your butt all Winter, Spring, and Summer hitting the fall seasons firing on all cylinders.  If you were hunting out West then you were likely done in Oct, maybe early November.  If you are more in the Midwest or East perhaps your season got extended through December.  Either way, season is over, now what? The Cover from The Journal of the Texas Trophy Hunters with My Latest Article.

Great news for Hunting Fit!  My latest magazine article just came out in the Jan/Feb copy of the The Journal of the Texas Trophy Hunters.  This is the official magazine of The Texas Trophy Hunters Association which I have been a member of for several years now.  It details Continue Reading…

Now may seem like an odd time for a gear review review on a bug repellent as I just finished up a trail run in 6 inches of snow and subzero windchill, but really now is a great time to be thinking about your Spring adventures.   Look at it this way, you likely just received some gift cards or had to take back the pink bunny suit so you’ve got a little expendable income right now.  Think forward a few months to when you’re turkey hunting, camping, or doing a little Spring fishing and how awful the mosquitoes will be.  At that point it will be too late and you’ll have to just grin and bear it. Take advantage of some great technology and make your upcoming outdoors activities just a little more enjoyable.  Thermacell has been expanding their lineup of mosquito repellers continuously since hitting the market several years ago.  One of their most recent offerings is the MR450 which I had the pleasure of testing out this past summer.   Continue Reading…

Next Year, Be Your Own Pack Animal (photo courtesy of gohunt.com)

With hunting seasons freshly behind some of you and several months already under your belt for those who still have some time left, where did your fitness fall short?  On the flip side of that, what went very well for you?  I ask these questions because there is no better time than immediately following an event (or season) to evaluate your performance. The Subalpine Pattern is the Latest from the Team at Sitka.

In the world of technical hunting clothing Sitka has clearly made a name for themselves as arguably the premier manufacturer.  They have a wide range of offerings for all types of sportsmen AND women ranging from whitetail hunters, waterfowl hunters, to mountain hunters and anything in between.  With such an extensive offering and the fact that they strive for continuous improvement it’s easy to see why I’m a fan.  This past year at the ATA show when I met the team from Sitka it was truly fascinating to see and understand the thought and efforts that go into their work.  With all this being said, when I got the chance to try out several pieces from their Subalpine collection I was ecstatic! When it comes to footwear I’m not one to cut any corners.  Even as a child my dad would always tell me you’ve got to take care of your feet.  That advise has proven accurate and something I have not taken lightly.  Think about it this way, every single step you take while in the field your feet have to balance on whatever terrain you’re on and transmit the force from your body to the ground and back up again.  If you’re not on your feet then you’re not going to get much hunting done.  With all that being said, I had the pleasure of being introduced to a company I had never heard of before, Le Chameau.  While I believe their bread and butter for years has been their outstanding rubber boots they also offer a leather hunting boot.  I had the opportunity to try out the Condor LCX this year leading up to and during the hunting season. Even Though You See Beauty Like This in Elk Country I Had Some Reservations Prior to My Recent Elk Hunt.

I wrote an article a week or so ago pondering some of my thoughts about an upcoming elk hunt.  Now that I’ve actually went on that hunt I thought I would follow up with where I’m at today looking back at the comments I made.

At the time I was feeling the necessity to kill an elk on the trip to make it worthwhile.  That need was to fulfill several gaps including the financial investment I had in the trip as well as the time away from my family.  Continue Reading…

Just One of The Beautiful Sights I’ve Experienced Chasing Elk.

I’m not an expert.  But I do try and learn each and every time I head to the woods.  I’ll soon be elk hunting and based on my previous trips I thought I would share some of the things I’m going to do this year to hopefully help put some elk meat back in my freezer. Continue Reading…

Is This What My Dreams Are Made Of?  (photo courtesy of wideopenspaces.com)

It’s almost time.  I’ve been waiting for two years and now the adventure is near.  I feel as if I’m not prepared although I’ve got more than enough food and gear and am in as good a shape as I’ve been in in 20 years.  I’ve got great hunting partners along with a pocket full of tags.  The anticipation is overwhelming right now but it will be over before I know it.  Will it be a success?  Sure it will.  I’ll bring home memories regardless of the outcome.  That’s the point.  Well, part of the point.  I really  like eating meat.  That’s the other portion of why I pour so much effort into my hunts.  Meat.  Yep.  That’s it.
